|The Zemaljski Muzej - the National Museum of Bosnia-Herzegovina - was one of the great research institutions of the Balkan region. Founded by the Austro-Hungarian administration in 1888, it is housed in 4 pavilions (containing the Archaeology, Ethnogology, Natural Sciences Department and the Library) surrounding a central botanical garden. Built in 1913 and largely unchanged, its beautiful interiors are among the few surviving in museums of the Austro-Hungarian period. |
Although positioned on the front line during the 1992-95 and continually attacked, its collections survived due to the dedication of its staff and it continued to function throughout the war.
