Bosnian Court Rules on Ethnic Equality
Bosnia's joint Constitutional Court has ruled that Serbs, Croats, and Muslims must enjoy full legal equality everywhere on Bosnian territory, it was reported on 2 July 2000.
Under the existing entity constitutions, Serbs have a specific status in Republika Srpska, as do Bosniaks and Croats in the Federation. The effects of the ruling (which has not yet been published) could be highly significant, provided that it is enforced.
Alija Izetbegovic has described it as the most important development in BosniaüHerzegovina since Dayton.
For the background to this ruling, see the Declaration of the Serb Civic Council and the texts of its proposed amendments to the BüH Constitution in Bosnia Report (original series) 19, JuneüAugust 1997.
