Source: Veliki geografski atlas Jugoslavije [Large Geographical Atlas of Yugoslavia] Zagreb 1987. Given the high Albanian birth rate (around 30 per 1,000) compared to that of the Serbs (around 4 per 1,000), the relative weight of the Albanian population has increased greatly in the period 1981-1999. The 1991 census was boycotted by the Albanian population, in protest against the removal of Kosova's autonomy and out of justified concern that the Serbian authorities would falsify its results.
