AY! CARMELA
SARAJEVO WAR THEATRE

A classic European play by Jose Sanchis Sinisterra. Set in the Spanish Civil War, this is the phenomenally powerful and exuberant story of Carmela and Paulino and their travelling cabaret company; summoned by Franco's forces to give a final performance for the fascist troops and the Republican POWs they will execute the next day. This is a surprisingly humour-filled meditation on artistic and cultural freedom: how much is it possible to compromise in the face of censorship and dictatorial control? What do you do in the face of inevitable doom? Such questions that became a daily reality during Bosnia's own recent conflict. Superbly acted, the SARTR production of AY CARMELA has been acclaimed by its own playwright as one of the greatest versions ever created. Performed by Selma Alispahic (who has a long film and theatre career which includes productions for Theatre de Complicite and the Royal National Theatre) Dragan Jovicic and Meida Supuk.
