This book is of real historical interest - but not as a work of history. Rose's account of the origins and outbreak of the war is a parade of ignorance: names, dates and simple facts are garbled on page after page; and when he ends with a military ‘analysis' of the ‘new' factors that made possible the ending of the war by NATO in 1995, he grossly contradicts his own earlier statements in the book, when he pointed out that the same key factors were already in place in early 1994. But the historical value of this book lies in its nature as evidence, not analysis. What it offers to posterity is damning evidence of the mentality of a senior British UN commander at a crucial stage in the Bosnian war - of his cultural sympathies and antipathies, his historical and political ignorance, and his systematic suspicion and hostility towards the Bosnian Government and its forces.
