After a trickle of independent travellers to Bosnia in the years after the war, tourists are now returning in numbers, attracted by the country’s complex cultural heritage of Ottoman, Western European and Byzantine civilizations and the beauty of its landscape from the white limestone Mediterranean landscapes of Herzegovina to the green rolling hills of Central and North-western Bosnia, by its spectacular mountains and beautiful rivers like the turquoise Neretva and the serpent-like green Una that flows through Bihac.
After a kick-start to an international tourism campaign by Paddy Ashdown in 2004 and the publication of the first travel guide to Bosnia the same year (“Bosnia & Herzegovina” by Tim Clancy, Bradt Travel Guides*), tourism authorities in Bosnia-Herzegovina have made intensive efforts to attract visitors to the country. With infrastructure restored, large hotels repaired, and more small hotels and pensions opening every year, mainstream tour operators have begun to discover Bosnia. |
