Robert Donia, author of the newly published 'Sarajevo: a Biography', has been a frequent visitor to Bosnia-Herzegovina and its capital Sarajevo since the 1970s. His first academic work was a study of Bosnia under Austro-Hungarian rule, 'Islam under the Double Eagle: the Muslims of Bosnia and Hercegovina 1878-1914'. With Professor John Fine he subsequently co-authored 'Bosnia-Hercegovina: a tradition betrayed' (1994). He has also appeared as a historical expert witness in several trials at the Hague, including that of Slobodan Milosevic. For three semesters in the past three years he has been a visiting professor of history at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. At the BI's June forum he delivered a marvellous power-point presentation on the siege of Sarajevo, with challenging interpretations of many aspects of its background, purpose and conduct, stimulating an excellent discussion with the larger than usual audience.
