The Musical Heritage of Bosnia-Herzegovina

Ethno-musicologist Risto Pekka Pennanen spoke, with music and visual illustrations, about the heritage of folk music in Bosnia, focusing on the unique collection held by EMI Music Archive that was recorded in Sarajevo in 1907-1908, during the Austro-Hungarian period. He also discussed the prospects for collecting, restoring and re-issuing early Bosnian recordings.
Risto Pekka Pennanen received his PhD in ethno-musicology from the University of Tampere, Finland in 1999, after which he worked as an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow at the Department of Musicology at Georg-August-University in Göttingen, Germany. Currently he is a research fellow at the department of musical anthropology, University of Tampere. He has conducted field work in Bosnia, Bulgaria and Greece. Recent research projects have included ones on nationalism and music in the Balkans, and on music in Austro-Hungarian Bosnia-Herzegovina.
